StatusNet (formerly Laconica) is an open source microblogging server written in PHP that implements the OpenMicroBlogging standard for interoperation between installations. While offering functionality similar to Twitter, Laconica seeks to provide the potential for open, inter-service and distributed communications between microblogging communities. Enterprises and individuals can install and control their own services and data.
Laconica was renamed to StatusNet coinciding with the release of the release of version 0.8.1 (aka "Second Guessing") of the Laconica software.
Some features include:
* Updates using a Jabber or Gtalk client, and probably any other XMPP client
